Why Most Goal Setting Fails—And How To Fix It

Are you a goal setter or a goal achiever?

Or, are you like I used to be and have simply stopped setting goals?

Eventually I got so tired of setting goals and not achieving them that I stopped setting them all together.

I don’t know about you, but goals made me feel like a total loser because I would set them and then forget about them or set them and not achieve them. Both scenarios left me feeling terrible about myself so I simply stopped setting them.

Can you relate? When you think of goals do you feel excited? Motivated? Inspired? Or do you sigh and roll your eyeballs into the back of your head?

Let me fill you in on a little secret…

Our productivity obsessed culture has taught goal setting COMPLETELY wrong!

They’ve over complicated them.

Depersonalized them.

Turned something that should thrill and excite you into drudgery.

They’ve taken this critical component of productivity, that should give you confidence and pride, and instead sets you up for total failure.

I mean take SMART goals, one of the most popular ways of setting goals, and yet SMART goals are fundamentally flawed in design. They are missing the 2 most critical ingredients necessary to achieve ANY goal.

Believe it or not, if you’ve set goals in the past, and haven’t been able to achieve them, it’s likely not been your fault! It’s been the fault of misinformation.

One of the biggest reasons your goals end up in the goal wasteland is because they are externally motivated.

External motivation is short lived; it doesn’t have the power to carry you forward long-term so you lose steam, you lose interest, you lose motivation and you pay the highest price of all…

External goals cost you your confidence.

Now, on the other hand, when you set goals that are in alignment, goals that motivate, inspire and excite YOU, those goals are internally motivated.

Internal motivation is your super power,

It’s the force that fuels the drive inside you long-term.

Internal goals are what keep you motivated to stay the course when things are challenging.
