Retailing Like a Boss: Women Retail Owners Share Their Stories, Insights, and Trend Predictions

“I love that retail is both art and science, instinct and data," says Susie McCabe, Senior Vice President of Global Retail for Under Armour. "For me, retail has always been the perfect mix of strategy, financial acumen, creativity, problem solving, inter-personal connections and emotion. It has an amazing pace and rhythm to it. No day is the same..."

McCabe was named as one of Total Retail's leading female executives in the retail industry for 2016, and her quote rings true for anyone with experience in retail. It's also a quote that might ring true for any woman business owner; no two days are the same, but every day requires a mix of strategy, skill, creativity, and emotion.

For our September luncheon, NAWBO Greater Raleigh is pleased to invite some of the top established retailers from our area. We'll hear their stories, learn from their insights, and peek into their trend predictions for fall and beyond.

Don't miss this incredible chance to see these women:

Pam Blondin, DECO Raleigh & DECO Home

Pam opened DECO Raleigh with a focus on promoting local artisans and creating community downtown. She got into retail after nearly 30 years as a non-profit executive. Her shop has become a Raleigh landmark, offering patrons provocative greeting cards, baby goods, locally made crafts and jewelry.

Pam's newest venture, DECO Home, opened less than a year ago. It's a new, physically separate space for DECO, but it offers the same passion and local flair. DECO Home sells furniture, books, home decor, and art, freeing up space at DECO Raleigh to sell more of its best-selling gifts.

Pam is also known for her advocacy and community support. Since 2012, Deco has donated more than $40,000 in cash and goods to local charities and arts organizations. Pam currently serves on the Raleigh Downtown Plan Advisory Committee and has become an outspoken advocate for a dynamic, creative and visionary downtown.

Pam is the co-founder and sponsor of raleigh [ ] space, Raleigh’s first parklet; this project engaged NCSU students, local businesses and hundreds of Raleigh citizens and was later awarded a 2015 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Innovation. She is also co-founder of the Flight Fund (fiscally sponsored by the Visual Art Exchange) that supports public art projects in Raleigh.

Mandy Becker, Swagger

Mandy Becker is living her lifelong dream of owning a gift and clothing boutique as the owner of Swagger. Since opening in November 2002 in Cary, Mandy has focused on customer service, giving back to the community, and helping to develop women to be the best they can be. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously”, says Mandy.”We’re all about having fun at work, hiring good people to be around, and having the types of relationships with our customers that turn into great friendships along the way.”

All of the fun has paid off, too – Swagger is continually recognized as a must-shop favorite by its customers in numerous local publications and in June 2015 Mandy was selected as a Cary Magazine “Mover and Shaker” for her contributions to, and impact on, the Western Wake community. Look for a second Swagger location coming to Raleigh in October!

Jen Hankin, Peachy Keen and Joint Venture Jewelry

Sisters Jen and Karly Hankin joined their family business five years ago with the launch of Peachy Keen, a contemporary women’s boutique to complement their parents’ estate jewelry trade, Joint Venture Jewelry. Today, Peachy Keen Boutique and Joint Venture Jewelry operate at a combined retail location in Cary’s Harrison Pointe Shopping Center.

Jen has had a hand in her family's business since she was in grade school. Starting out as holiday gift wrapper, Jen has evolved to become Director of Communications for both Joint Venture Jewelry and Peachy Keen, focusing on social media, public relations, and marketing after graduating from North Carolina State University in May 2011.

Her dedicated efforts have made the stores' social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Blog, Pinterest, etc.) the “it” spot for jewelry and fashion industry news, trends, and facts in the Triangle.

Peachy Keen also often hosts fundraisers and fashion events benefitting local nonprofits.
