The Enterprising Women Foundation Mentorship Luncheon
Posted by admin on 01/16/2013 12:00 am
The Enterprising Women Foundation, a sister nonprofit to Enterprising Women, the magazine for women business owners, is hosting its first annual luncheon to showcase the importance of mentorship. The Enterprising Women Foundation Mentorship Luncheon will take place on January 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Matthews House in downtown Cary. January 24th is National Mentorship Day and the Foundation will be hosting a series of luncheon events around the United States in 2013. The Cary luncheon is the first luncheon on the schedule and will be co-hosted by more than 20 leading women entrepreneurs in the Triangle. The Foundation is also partnering with the Girl Scouts, who have selected 20 outstanding young women from among their members who have strong leadership potential and an interest in entrepreneurship.
Enterprising Women magazine has featured an article on the Girl Scouts in its current issue, noting that of the organization's 2.3 million members, 70 percent of them are engaged in the cookie sale program. "It is by far the largest entrepreneurial training program for girls in the United States," Monica Smiley, Enterprising Women Publisher and Foundation president noted. "The Girl Scouts have developed an extensive badge program around the development of entrepreneurial skills, as well as a very impressive badge program for financial literacy. We think this partnership with the Girl Scouts and the Enterprising Women Foundation is a perfect opportunity to showcase the value of young women having mentors in their lives who can encourage them to dream big and achieve those dreams," Smiley added.
The luncheon will include a half hour of "meet and mingle" time to give the 20 Girl Scouts a time to meet the outstanding women entrepreneurs and business leaders who will attend the luncheon and for the business owners to get to know the girls. The program begins at noon and will include a presentation of the Girl Scout Award, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Retired Alphanumeric Systems Owner Darlene Johns, who also owns the Shops at Baleywick, will be the recipient of this award. There is also a focus at the luncheon on encouraging the girls to consider careers or entrepreneurial ventures related to STEM--science, technology, engineering and math.
Tickets for the luncheon are $75 each or women entrepreneurs may host a Girl Scout who will be seated at her table for an additional $25. Watch for the official invitation to arrive in your inbox this week. To pay by credit card, please call Beth Blake at 919-674-3378 or email her at [email protected]. Checks may be sent to the Enterprising Women Foundation, 1135 Kildaire Farm Rd., Suite 200, Cary, NC 27511. Your contribution to the Enterprising Women Foundation is tax-deductible. A portion of the proceeds from this event will also benefit the Girl Scouts to support local projects related to entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
Enterprising Women has been a media partner of NAWBO for the past 13 years and Monica Smiley serves on the NAWBO National Advisory Council.
